The Rohingya community has expressed growing frustration and concern over the National Unity Government’s (NUG) continued silence regarding the tragic deaths of hundreds of Rohingya civilians amidst the Arakan Army’s (AA) aggressive campaign to seize control of Maungdaw.
Back in June 2021, the NUG made headlines by issuing a statement titled “Rohingya Policy,” where they deliberately employed the term “Rohingya” to garner international sympathy and support. However, critics have since pointed out that the NUG has fallen woefully short in translating this policy into meaningful action.
During a highly anticipated online meeting on August 29, 2022, which included the participation of the NUG’s Acting President and Prime Minister, and representatives from the Rohingya community in Arakan State, the NUG pledged to prioritize three critical issues: ensuring justice and accountability for crimes against the Rohingya, creating conducive conditions for the safe and dignified return of the Rohingya to their homeland, and striving for genuine equality in both law and practice.
Yet, as two years have passed, the Rohingya refugee community in Bangladesh has voiced their disillusionment, noting that none of these promises have materialized. Despite the NUG’s rhetoric, tangible progress on these fronts remains elusive.
Moreover, the NUG’s commitment to repealing the 1982 citizenship law, which effectively stripped the Rohingya of their birthright citizenship, has not been realized. Many observers now question the NUG’s sincerity, noting the lack of concrete steps to recognize the Rohingya’s citizenship rights within the framework of their legal mandate.
As the situation in Maungdaw deteriorates, the death toll among Rohingya civilians continues to rise. Harrowing reports describe a region littered with the bodies of Rohingya men, women, and children. Disturbing images and videos circulating on social media paint a grim picture of the unfolding humanitarian disaster, yet the NUG remains conspicuously silent.
The Rohingya community, both in Myanmar and in exile, are now demanding accountability and action, calling on the NUG to honor its commitments and take decisive steps to protect and uplift the Rohingya people.
