In the wake of the most severe flooding to hit Bangladesh in three decades, a group of Rohingya refugees has risen to the occasion, providing critical emergency assistance to thousands of flood-affected families. Since August 20, the devastating floods have swept through southeastern and northeastern regions of the country, resulting in at least 59 deaths and impacting approximately 5.5 million people across 11 districts, including Feni, Khulna, Chattogram, Kagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur, and Cox’s Bazar.
On August 31, 12 groups of Rohingya refugees from the camps in Cox’s Bazar united in a remarkable effort to deliver emergency relief to 3,000 families in the flood-stricken areas of Feni, Khulna, and Noakhali. Leading the effort was Alam Shah, a Rohingya who fled Myanmar in 2017. “We felt compelled to help the flood victims,” Shah said. “We reached out to every Rohingya family in the refugee camp for support, and our people responded generously.”
Shah emphasized the importance of standing by those who have supported the Rohingya during their time of need. “If a friend doesn’t come through in times of need, they’re not true friends,” he remarked. “I am proud to contribute to this rescue effort.”
The Rohingya teams provided essential supplies, including rice, beans, oil, clothing, and basic medicine. Documentary photographer and activist Sahet Ziya Hero, who participated in the relief effort, commented, “We brought food donated by the Rohingya community. Though we may not have vast resources, our compassion and shared experience as refugees drive us to help. We remember how Bangladesh saved us, and we want to support them in their time of need.”
The selfless actions of the Rohingya have drawn widespread praise. Shohidul Islam, a statistics professor at Greenland College in Feni, remarked, “This act of kindness is a powerful example of humanity. Despite being refugees themselves, the Rohingyas have stepped up to assist others. This initiative highlights the true spirit of humanitarian aid.”
The Rohingya community’s efforts to support their host country during this time of crisis underscore the deep bonds of solidarity and resilience that continue to define their journey.
