Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Tohid Hussain announced on September 3 that more than 8,000 Rohingya fleeing the conflict in Arakan State have recently crossed into Bangladesh.
“Iβve received reports that approximately 8,000 Rohingya have entered Bangladesh. The government will hold serious discussions on this matter within the next two or three days,” Hussain stated.
He further noted that Bangladesh has, in principle, decided not to admit additional Rohingya asylum seekers displaced by the ongoing violence. “Although the Myanmar border is sealed, fully securing it is a difficult task. While itβs impossible to completely encircle the border, the government is determined to take steps to prevent more Rohingya from entering,” Hussain explained.
On the issue of repatriation, Hussain suggested that engaging with the Arakan Army (AA), which controls most of Arakan State, could pave the way for potential progress. “Establishing communication with the AA could be a path forward, but we need to carefully assess what can be achieved at the state level,” he added.
