Five Rohingya individuals from Shwe Zar Kappa Gaung Rohingya village in Maungdaw Township were apprehended by Myanmar Military’s BGP Battalion 5, stationed in Myo Thu Gyi, on March 21, 2024.
According to a resident, the military conducted a raid in the Rohingya village, detaining the five youths while they were at home during the operation.
The raid, executed by personnel from BGP Battalion 5, saw the village surrounded as the arrests were made.
Concerns arise that the detainees may be forcibly conscripted into military service.
Moreover, on the same day, several prominent figures and religious leaders from Maungdaw were also detained by the military. They were allegedly coerced to pressure the Rohingya community into organizing demonstrations against the Arakan Army, similar to those in Buthidaung and Akyab.
These detained individuals remain in custody at the Myo Thu Gyi BGP battalion.
The Rohingya community awaits further developments amid growing tensions in the region.
