A Rohingya man sustained critical injuries in a landmine explosion on November 8, 2024, near the Tombru border in northern Maungdaw Township.

According to local sources, the incident occurred in a paddy field located in the no-man’s-land area, also known as Zero Point. The man, a daily wage worker, was engaged in farming when the landmine detonated. The explosion caused severe injuries across his body and led to the loss of his left leg.

“The Arakan Army (AA) has planted numerous landmines in various locations along the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar,” reported a source. “When people go to the farmlands, these mines sometimes explode, leading to injuries and, in some cases, fatalities.”

The Tombru area has reportedly been under the control of the Arakan Army (AA) for the past few months after the withdrawal of the Myanmar Military Council. The AA has allegedly placed landmines in several cultivated fields and other strategic locations along the border.

“When people go to these areas to work, they risk triggering the mines. This has resulted in many tragic incidents, including injuries and deaths,” added the source.

The injured man is currently receiving medical treatment, though his condition remains critical.
