Three Rohingya civilians were critically injured in a landmine explosion in Gunnah Hamlet, Shwe Zar village tract, Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Myanmar, on February 6 at approximately 4:00 PM. The landmine, allegedly planted by either the Arakan Army (AA) or the Myanmar military , detonated within the compound of Nur Kaida (30 years old), resulting in severe injuries to her and two others.

The victims include:

  • Nur Kaida (30 years old): Lost her leg after stepping on the landmine.
  • Shahey Akter (2 years old), A young child critically injured in the explosion.
  • Kyaw Myint Naing (28 years old): Also critically injured.

A local source stated, β€œA leg of Nur Kaida was completely severed as she stepped on the landmine, and the other two victims are also in critical condition. Urgent medical treatment is imperative for them.”

This incident follows two other recent landmine explosions in the same area:

  • On February 5 at approximately 6:30 AM, another Rohingya man was seriously wounded in a landmine explosion, losing one of his legs entirely.
  • On January 29 at around 7:00 PM, Khurshid Alom, son of Mohammed Esope, was injured in a landmine explosion while descending from his home into the compound.

According to a local source, β€œSince December 8, 2024, the Myanmar genocidal military junta has been absent, and Maungdaw is now entirely under the control of the Arakan Army (AA). The Arakan Army (AA) has deliberately planted numerous landmines in several parts of Maungdaw, particularly in and around Rohingya residential areas, targeting Rohingya civilians while blaming the incidents on others.”

The repeated landmine explosions highlight the dire security situation faced by Rohingya civilians, who are already vulnerable due to systemic discrimination and violence. The injured victims require urgent medical attention, which is often difficult to access in conflict-affected areas.

The international community has repeatedly condemned the violence against the Rohingya and called for accountability. However, the situation remains dire, with limited access for humanitarian organizations and ongoing clashes between armed groups.
