On September 29, 2024, airstrikes conducted by the Myanmar military led to the destruction of 18 houses, one mosque, and one shop belonging to Rohingya communities in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Myanmar.

The military reportedly dropped around 60 bombs between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, targeting Ward No. 02, Narishong, Basic Education High School No. 02, and Ali village in Maungdaw. A mosque located in Ward No. 02 was completely destroyed during the initial airstrikes at approximately 8:00 AM. By 10:00 AM, 18 houses and a shop in Ali village were reduced to ashes after being hit by bombs dropped from a Y-12 jet fighter.

β€œThe bomb explosions occurred in three different locations. Eighteen houses, a mosque, and a shop were burned down to ashes due to the explosions of bombs dropped by the military,” reported a local source.

Reliable information suggests that these areas had been previously used by the Arakan Army (AA) to launch attacks against the Myanmar military’s Battalion 5 (Nakaka 5) in Maungdaw.

Further airstrikes were reported near Battalion 5, around 3 to 4 miles away, at around 1:00 PM on September 30th, as the Myanmar military dropped additional bombs suspecting AA presence in those regions.

Recently, the Myanmar military has escalated the use of jet fighters, including the Y-12, in their operations to protect Battalion 5 in Maungdaw.
