The Rohingya community in Buthidaung has confirmed that the Arakan Army (AA) recently arrested and detained U Hla Aung, a respected headmaster and community leader. U Hla Aung, known for his dedication to education and charity work, served as a school headmaster teaching Burmese to high school students of all ethnicities.
A student of U Hla Aung shared that the headmaster is widely respected across Buthidaung Township for his contributions to education and his dedication to the welfare of the people, regardless of background. “He is known for his integrity and commitment to the community,” the student said.
Residents of Buthidaung emphasized that U Hla Aung had no connections with the Myanmar military, stating, “The Rakhine people know his character well, and some of his students are Rakhine themselves.”
The arrest took place on October 22, when AA members reportedly detained U Hla Aung at his home without any explanation. Since then, he has not been permitted any contact with his family, nor have they been allowed to visit him. “They did not provide any reason for his arrest, nor disclose his whereabouts, and acted rudely during the detention,” said a person familiar with the situation.
The AA has also recently detained another prominent figure, U Hamid, an Islamic religious scholar in his 70s from Maungdaw Township.
Local analysts express concern over the recent arrests of well-known Rohingya community leaders and scholars, fearing it could undermine peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups. They urge the AA to distinguish between armed groups and innocent civilians, ensuring the protection of the latter.
The arrest of U Hla Aung has left the Rohingya community deeply concerned for his safety. Ko Myo Lwin, one of his students, voiced the community’s fears: “No one knows why he was arrested or where he’s being held. The lack of information and access to him only heightens our worries.”
