Maungdaw, Arakan State – Over 70 Rohingya families from Northern Myaw Taung Village in Maungdaw Township have been torn from their homes and are now enduring unimaginable hardship. On July 16, 2024, the Arakan Army (AA) invaded the area, forcing these families to flee their homes in fear. Since then, they have sought refuge in nearby villages, but their homes remain out of reach, and their lives have been upended.
According to a local source, the displaced families initially thought they were running from the chaos of war. But it soon became clear that their forced departure was not just a result of violence—it was a calculated move by the AA to take control of their land. The displaced Rohingya are now unable to return, with the AA blocking them from reclaiming their homes or personal belongings, deepening their suffering.
The AA has also seized control of the fertile lands around Myaw Taung Village, leaving the displaced families with no means to support themselves. A source close to the AA’s Northern Maung Forest headquarters confirmed that the Rohingya are no longer able to farm the land that once sustained them. On top of this, the AA has failed to issue the necessary household list (ATSA) to these families, cutting them off from any legal recognition and depriving them of vital humanitarian aid.
The dire situation was tragically underscored on March 16, 2025, when 46-year-old Rashidar Ba Gown (Abba) Mamatka Sein was killed while attempting to return to his home. As he made his way back to Myaw Taung, he was attacked by wild elephants. The severe injuries he sustained to his face were too much for him to bear, and without access to medical treatment, he tragically passed away. His death paints a stark picture of the dangers these displaced Rohingya face daily.
Now, with no homes to go back to and no way to earn a living, these 70 families are facing a humanitarian crisis. Struggling without food or essential resources, their survival is hanging by a thread. Their pain and fear grow as each day passes without help.
The situation in Maungdaw continues to worsen, with the Rohingya suffering injustice and hardship at every turn. Immediate international attention and action are urgently needed to protect these families and provide the assistance they desperately need.
