Medan, Indonesia – December 31, 2023: Among 134 Rohingya refugees detained in Karang Gading camp, Medan, Indonesia, for the past 11 months, 20 have reportedly been sold, while the remaining detainees face inhumane torture and degrading living conditions.

The detainees, who fled persecution in Myanmar, are now enduring extreme hardship in the camp. A Rohingya detainee described their plight, saying, “We are living in poverty without proper shelter on the mud. The living conditions are terrible due to insufficient food, medicine, and basic necessities.”

Reports from inside the camp detail brutal abuse at the hands of security forces. “The guards are forcing us to flee to Malaysia by torturing us with sticks, punches, and kicks. They threaten to kill us all if we don’t comply,” the detainee continued. On December 17, two individuals were reportedly sold, and 18 more were sold on December 20.

The exploitation has sparked outrage among Rohingya activists, some of whom have been arrested for attempting to seek help from the international community and the United Nations. Activists are calling for immediate intervention to save the lives of the detained Rohingya.

The Indonesian government has yet to respond to allegations of torture and trafficking within the camp. Human rights organizations and the international community are being urged to take immediate action to address the abuses and ensure the safety and dignity of the Rohingya refugees.
