In the early hours of August 19, a desperate journey to safety ended in tragedy for a group of Rohingya in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State. Fleeing unbearable conditions, over 30 people embarked on a dangerous boat crossing the Naf River, hoping to find refuge in Bangladesh. But their hopes were shattered when the boat capsized, leaving only four survivors to tell the tale.

A local resident shared the heartbreaking reason behind this exodus: “We’re fleeing Bangladesh because there’s no safe place for us anymore. Villages have been deserted, and people are being forced out of their homes. We have nowhere left to go, so we take these dangerous risks.”

The situation in Maungdaw is equally grim. Families, including the elderly and young children, are caught in the crossfire of conflict. Drone bombings and heavy artillery have struck their communities, leaving many injured and without access to medical care in areas controlled by the Arakan Army (AA). The lack of food, medicine, and basic necessities is worsening their already unimaginable suffering.

A Rohingya war refugee voiced the desperate plea of many: “We need help—urgent help. Without medical care, food, and support, our lives are in danger.”

The Rohingya people in Maungdaw are crying out for humanitarian aid and international intervention. Their future hangs in the balance, and without immediate assistance, countless lives remain at risk.
