Arakan State – The UK-based Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) is urgently calling for international intervention to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Arakan State. The ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army (AA) and the military council has severely impacted Rohingya civilians, with immediate action needed to prevent further violence and provide essential aid to those affected.
On August 5, 2024, approximately 200 Rohingya women and children were tragically killed while attempting to flee violence in Maungdaw, underscoring the severity of the situation. This massacre follows the May 17 terrorist attack in Buthidaung, for which eyewitnesses have implicated the Arakan Army as the primary perpetrator.
“The Rohingya in Arakan State are facing extreme danger, and the international community cannot remain passive. These are not isolated incidents but deliberate and systematic acts of violence that must be halted,” said BROUK President U Tun Khin.
BROUK is urging the United Nations, international humanitarian organizations, and governments worldwide to take the following urgent actions in Arakan State:
- Provide food, medicine, and shelter to those in need.
- Create safe spaces for Rohingya and other civilians.
- Facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid from Bangladesh to northern Arakan State.
- Allow an independent international investigation team to enter and assess the situation in Arakan State.
- Ensure adherence to international humanitarian law.
“The crisis in Arakan State is a severe humanitarian emergency that demands immediate international intervention. The world’s silence in the face of such violence against the Rohingya is a test of our collective humanity. The international community must act decisively to end this crisis and secure justice for the Rohingya,” said U Tun Khin.
