Manipur CM N Biren Singh on Wednesday said that up to 79 Rohingya nationals have been arrested so far by the police.

Singh was replying to a question in the state assembly on Wednesday.

While 27 of them are still serving prison terms under the Foreigners’ Act, the rest of them have been released, he added.

“They (Rohingyas) entered Manipur from Myanmar through Moreh town, and from other parts of the northeast states through Jiri town. We have instructed the police to beef up security to round up Rohingyas,” the CM said.

He said the Manipur government had approached the Centre for implementing the National Register of Citizens in the state just like the way it’s being updated in neighbouring Assam. This will help the police identify and arrest foreigners, he said.

Thirty-two Rohingyas were arrested in 2012; while 36 foreigners were booked last year.
