In recent months, Indian authorities have dramatically escalated their campaign to identify and expel so-called “illegal immigrants” within the country’s borders. This intensified operation disproportionately targets Indian Muslim citizens and Rohingya refugees, resulting in widespread arbitrary arrests, prolonged unlawful detention, documented cases of torture, and forced deportations to Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Rohingya community in India, already vulnerable and stateless after fleeing systematic persecution in Myanmar, faces new and grave dangers amid these harsh crackdowns. Many are apprehended without due process, held in detention centers under inhumane conditions, and in some cases forcibly removed from Indian soil without access to legal recourse or protection.

Human rights group Fortify Rights has issued a strong condemnation of the campaign. In a statement, John Sifton, Executive Director of Fortify Rights, said:

“India is targeting its Muslim citizens and refugees with a discriminatory campaign. These actions not only violate international human rights law, but deepen the dangerous marginalization of Muslims and refugees in India.”

Fortify Rights calls on the Indian government to immediately cease all unlawful expulsions and respect the rights and dignity of all individuals residing within its borders, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

This crackdown comes amid a broader global context of increasing challenges for Rohingya refugees, who continue to seek protection after the brutal military-led atrocities in Myanmar. India, hosting thousands of Rohingya refugees, has a responsibility to uphold international legal standards for the protection of refugees and to ensure no one is forcibly returned to situations where their lives or freedoms would be at risk.

The international community is urged to closely monitor the situation and pressure India to respect human rights and refugee protections.
