Yesterday, United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) Gwyn Lewis met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, discussions centered on Bangladesh’s plan for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Arakan, Myanmar.
The UN Resident Coordinator congratulated the Foreign Secretary on his new position and expressed a desire to strengthen further and expand the partnership between Bangladesh and the United Nations. This meeting occurred as Bangladesh and the UN celebrated occurred as Bangladesh and the UN celebrated 50 years of cooperation.
At the meeting, the Foreign Secretary expressed gratitude for the support provided by UN agencies throughout Bangladesh’s development journey, from its early days of independence to the present. He particularly highlighted the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2022-2026 in achieving Bangladesh’s development goals.
Both parties emphasized the importance of upholding human rights and the rule of law, and exchanged views on good governance. They also discussed the international community’s role in supporting the repatriation of Rohingya refugees who were forcibly displaced from their homes in Myanmar.
“We recognize the significant efforts of UN agencies and other development partners in providing emergency humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh over the years,” the Foreign Minister noted.
In response, the UN Resident Coordinator assured the Foreign Secretary of continued cooperation in Bangladesh’s development efforts and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya population.
