Reports indicate that educated Rohingya men in Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships are being abducted by the Arakan Army (AA) without justification, with recent cases highlighting the forced disappearance of prominent individuals within the community.
On October 22, 2024, a respected Rohingya teacher from Ward No. 05 in Buthidaung Township, Saya Hla Aung, was reportedly abducted by the Arakan Army. Saya Hla Aung, known and respected among both the Rohingya and Rakhine communities in Buthidaung and Maungdaw, was taken from his home despite his family’s pleas for an explanation.
“Saya Hla Aung was at home when members of the Arakan Army (AA) arrived and forcibly removed him,” a family member stated. “Although his sons and relatives asked for reasons, no explanation was given. He has been taken to an unknown location.”
A student from Ward No. 05 expressed dismay over the teacher’s abduction, emphasizing his role in educating both Rohingya and Rakhine children. “Saya Hla Aung dedicated his life to teaching students from both communities in Buthidaung. His sudden abduction by the AA has left everyone in shock and fear,” the student added.
In addition to Saya Hla Aung, numerous educated Rohingya youths, including other notable figures, were reportedly abducted on October 24, 2024, with no clear cause.
A Rohingya activist commented, “The Arakan Army (AA) is systematically targeting Rohingya teachers, businessmen, and influential figures to weaken and spread fear throughout the community. Their goal seems to be to maintain control by diminishing any strength within our communities.”
