The Arakan Army (AA) has intensified its crackdown on the Rohingya community in Buthidaung Township by confiscating communication devices such as telephones and SIM cards, issuing severe warnings against their possession.

The AA has reportedly ordered that anyone found with telephones or SIM cards will be shot on sight, and their family members detained. This has instilled widespread fear among Rohingya residents, who are now facing heightened restrictions and intimidation.

On January 18, 2025, the AA encircled several Rohingya villages in southern Buthidaung, including Fuimali, Titupaut, Miyandafara, Nowyafara, Zummafara, Wariyoung, and Shafar Fara. During the operation, AA forces convened meetings with local Rohingyas, including evacuees, and demanded they surrender all communication devices. The use of telephones and SIM cards is now strictly prohibited in the area.

A resident of Fuimali revealed, โ€œMany telephones and SIM cards have already been seized by the Arakan Army AA, and they are also intimidating villagers in various ways.โ€

The AA has further ordered villagers to form groups of 10 to conduct nightly patrols to guard their villages. Movement restrictions have also been imposed, barring Rohingya residents from leaving their villages under any circumstances, while gatherings of more than three people are strictly forbidden.

The situation in northern Buthidaung, including areas such as Sein Nyin Par and Nyaung Chaung, is worsening. These regions, previously unscathed by the conflict between the Military Junta and the Arakan Army, have become shelters for displaced people. However, reports suggest that the AA is now targeting these areas, allegedly planning to implement the same oppressive tactics used in the southern and central parts of Buthidaung under various accusations.
