DHAKA – The United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, has called for an early political resolution in Myanmar to facilitate the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of the Rohingya refugees.

During a meeting on Sunday with Md. Touhid Hossain, Adviser for Foreign Affairs to Bangladesh’s interim government, Bishop emphasized the importance of sustained international attention on the Rohingya crisis. She expressed hope that the proposed UN conference—initiated by Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus—would generate the necessary momentum for meaningful international action.

Bangladesh currently hosts over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, most of whom fled the Myanmar military’s brutal crackdown in August 2017. Amid escalating conflict between Myanmar’s junta and rebel forces, an additional 100,000 Rohingya have reportedly crossed into Bangladesh in recent months, further straining resources and infrastructure.

Hossain stressed the critical role of the UN and its special envoy in fostering a sustainable resolution to the crisis. He warned that without decisive international intervention, continued instability in Myanmar could pose a significant threat to regional peace and security. He also underscored the need for increased global pressure on Myanmar to end the ongoing conflict and initiate meaningful reforms.

Both sides agreed to work collaboratively to ensure tangible outcomes from the upcoming UN conference, which aims to address the Rohingya crisis and broader minority-related issues in Myanmar.

Bishop is on a two-day visit to Bangladesh and is scheduled to visit Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on Monday.
