New York – The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution outlining the scope, modalities, format, and organization of a high-level conference addressing the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. Sponsored by Malaysia and Finland, the resolution marks a significant step in advancing international efforts to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis.

Diplomatic Engagement and Voting Outcome

During the open debate session, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Md Salahuddin Noman Choudhury, emphasized the urgency of addressing the crisis and proposed a vote on the resolution after Russia introduced amendments that Bangladesh did not support.

Following deliberations, the resolution was adopted with an overwhelming majority:

  • 141 countries voted in favor
  • No votes against
  • 10 countries abstained

The strong support for the resolution underscores the global consensus on the need for renewed diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to address the plight of the Rohingya and other marginalized communities in Myanmar.

Strategic Implications and Future Actions

The adoption of this resolution is particularly timely, as Bangladesh is preparing to host a special summit on the Rohingya crisis in New York this September. This development reflects a growing commitment from the international community to engage in meaningful dialogue and seek sustainable solutions for displaced Rohingya populations.

The high-level conference, facilitated under the framework of this resolution, is expected to mobilize international support, assess ongoing humanitarian challenges, and explore pathways for repatriation and long-term stability for Rohingya refugees.
