In a bold and timely affirmation, the United States has renewed its unwavering support for the Rohingya people and called on all parties to work toward an inclusive political solution in Myanmar. The move comes amid growing international concern over the prolonged military dictatorship, continued persecution of ethnic minorities, and the lack of tangible progress toward justice, peace, and democratic reform.
In an official statement highlighted by Arakan Now, the U.S. government reiterated its stance that any future political transition in Myanmar must involve the full and meaningful participation of the Rohingya. The U.S. emphasized that addressing the root causes of violence—including the denial of citizenship, displacement, and decades-long exclusion from national processes—is essential to restoring dignity and rights to the Rohingya population.
“The Rohingya people have suffered unimaginable brutality. Any lasting solution to the crisis in Myanmar must prioritize their safety, inclusion, and right to return with dignity,” the statement read.
U.S. officials also reinforced their support for international accountability mechanisms, including proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC), aimed at prosecuting those responsible for crimes against humanity and genocide. The statement sends a strong signal to both the Myanmar junta and regional stakeholders that impunity will not be tolerated.
While acknowledging the complex geopolitics of Southeast Asia, the United States encouraged stronger collaboration with ASEAN member states, Bangladesh, and the broader international community to facilitate safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation for Rohingya refugees currently sheltering in Cox’s Bazar and other host communities.
The pitch aligns with long-standing Rohingya demands: legal recognition, restoration of citizenship under the 1982 Citizenship Law, reparations for victims, and the establishment of a federal democratic Myanmar where all ethnicities have equal rights.
This renewed engagement from the U.S. comes at a time when global attention is scattered across numerous conflicts. Yet, the consistent voice for Rohingya justice from Washington brings renewed hope and visibility to a cause often silenced by geopolitics.
For many Rohingya leaders and advocates, this announcement is not just symbolic it’s an opportunity to leverage international pressure to bring about real, inclusive change on the ground.
