The Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh, Reto Renggli, recently met with Bangladeshi Foreign Counselor Touhid Hussain, who delivered a congratulatory message on behalf of the Swiss Federal Council.
During the meeting, Ambassador Renggli acknowledged the recent student-led protests in Bangladesh as a critical moment for potential reforms. He assured that Switzerland is in full support of the reform process, reflecting the Swiss government’s commitment to positive change in Bangladesh.
Foreign Counselor Hussain, in turn, sought the cooperation of Swiss authorities in addressing a key concern: the identification and return of assets illegally deposited in Swiss banks by Bangladeshi citizens. The Swiss Ambassador agreed to collaborate on this issue, stating that Switzerland would act in accordance with international standards and legal procedures.
Ambassador Renggli also expressed his satisfaction with Bangladesh’s accession to the UN Convention, affirming Switzerland’s readiness to cooperate on human rights issues. He highlighted Bangladesh’s promising market and announced Switzerland’s intention to boost trade relations and encourage new investments.
A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to the Rohingya crisis. Both officials emphasized the urgent need for safe, secure, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, stressing that the recognition of their rights is vital for resolving the crisis.
Ambassador Renggli also pledged continued humanitarian assistance for both the Rohingya refugees and the host communities in Cox’s Bazar, underscoring Switzerland’s commitment to supporting the ongoing relief efforts in Bangladesh.
