COX’S BAZAR – Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are facing an even greater struggle for survival as the United Nations announces a drastic cut to their monthly food rations. Starting April 1, 2025, each refugee will receive just $6 per month for food—down from $12.50—due to a severe funding crisis.

For over one million Rohingya refugees living in the overcrowded camps of Cox’s Bazar, food aid is their lifeline. Fleeing genocide and persecution in Myanmar, they are unable to work, go to school, or move freely. Now, with rations shrinking, many fear they will not have enough to eat. Aid workers warn that hunger and malnutrition will rise sharply, putting lives—especially those of children—at risk.

Past food cuts have already caused devastating consequences. Today, 90% of Rohingya refugees do not get enough to eat, and child malnutrition has soared to over 15%—the highest level in years. The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that anything below $6 per month is simply not enough to meet basic dietary needs, raising fears of a looming humanitarian catastrophe.

“As a Rohingya, it is heartbreaking to hear that our food rations will be cut from $12 to just $6—half of what was already not enough. We depend entirely on WFP aid, but due to a lack of funds, even that support is slipping away. I call on the international community to step in urgently before this crisis turns into a catastrophe.” Ro Mayyu Islam

The funding crisis has been worsened by global political shifts, including the Trump administration’s abrupt halt to U.S. foreign aid and the shutdown of critical programs like USAID. Without urgent action from the international community, Rohingya refugees will face deeper hunger and suffering.

Sahat Zia Hero, Co-Founder of Rohingyatograper, stated that it’s shocking to hear that the UN is going to reduce our food rations from $12.5 to $6 per month. Even $12 was not enough before.

The World should not keep watching this disaster, which is killing only the vulnerable people who are displaced due to war, violence, and conflict.

As the April deadline approaches, refugees and humanitarian groups are pleading for immediate support. Without it, thousands of families will be left asking a heartbreaking question: How will we survive?
