On August 14th, 2024, a violent clash between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar military in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, resulted in the deaths of over five Rohingya and left more than a dozen seriously wounded.

The intense battle took place in Ward No. 02 of Maungdaw Township, leading to significant casualties among the Rohingya community. Witnesses reported that at least five Rohingya, including women and children, were killed, while others sustained both minor and severe injuries. The wounded are in urgent need of medical attention, with some at risk of dying without immediate care.

One of the injured, identified as Mostafa Kamal, the son of Lal Miya from Shwe Zar village, had been evacuated to Ward No. 02, known as Hanri Fara. He sustained injuries during the strike in the area where he had sought refuge.

Mostafa Kamal recounted that the AA, referred to as the “Terrorist Moghs Group,” launched an attack on Ward No. 02 around 1:20 PM on August 14th. The strike, which claimed the lives of several Rohingya, was described as a deliberate act aimed at exterminating the Rohingya population in the ward, despite the absence of
Myanmar military since August 5th.

“There are many people who have been evacuated from Shwe Zar and other villages to Ward No. 02 due to the intensified clashes between the AA and Myanmar military. The evacuated Rohingya are being killed and injured in these intentional strikes. This strike is deliberately carried out only to exterminate Rohingya and make them homeless,” he added.

The situation in Maungdaw remains dire as both the AA and the Myanmar military continue to carry out attacks using drones, rockets, and heavy weaponry, targeting areas where Rohingya reside.
