Baharchara, Bangladesh โ€“ January 15, 2025: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested 38 Rohingya, including 30 children, from Arakan State, Myanmar. The arrests occurred in Baharchara as the refugees attempted to escape persecution and hardship in Myanmar.

In Myanmarโ€™s Arakan State, the Rohingya community continues to endure severe oppression under the Arakan Army (AA). Reports highlight widespread human rights abuses, including arbitrary arrests, forced labor, and heavy taxation.

Rohingya men are compelled to dig trenches for the AA daily. Those unable to participate face fines of 10,000 to 15,000 Myanmar kyats. Families without men are also subjected to these fines, making survival increasingly difficult for impoverished households. While wealthier families manage to pay to avoid forced labor, the poorest are forced to comply, working up to four times a month under harsh conditions.

The Rohingya are also grappling with severe ethnic discrimination, food shortages persisting for nearly six months, and systematic destruction of their homes. Many families are now homeless, living without shelter. Children are particularly vulnerable, suffering from malnutrition, hunger, and inadequate healthcare, leading to preventable deaths.

Facing such dire conditions, many Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh seeking survival, leaving behind a homeland that has become uninhabitable.
