Kyauk Phyu Township, Arakan State β€” Myanmar military forces have seized control of two villages in Kyauk Phyu Township from the Arakan Army (AA) after intense two-day clashes, during which homes were destroyed and set ablaze, according to local sources.

The regained areas Old Likkamaw Village and New Likkamaw Village were occupied by the AA until 15 August 2025, when sustained assaults by the Myanmar military forced AA fighters to withdraw. The attacks reportedly involved coordinated use of drones, artillery, and airstrikes beginning on 14 August.

β€œAA could not resist the heavy attacks and retreated this afternoon,” a Kyauk Phyu resident told RVision. β€œWhen the military took control, they began destroying and burning houses. Smoke was rising over the villages since around 4 p.m. Both villages have now been burned down.”

The villages, each home to over a hundred houses, had already seen most residents flee in earlier waves of displacement due to ongoing conflict in the area. The recent fighting has left the villages largely deserted, with only military personnel now stationed there.

Local sources allege that after deploying troops, the Myanmar military deliberately burned remaining civilian homes, a tactic widely reported in other contested areas of Arakan State.

The situation in Kyauk Phyu remains tense, with fears that the fighting could expand to surrounding villages, further worsening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
