Dhaka – Bangladesh has announced on Wednesday that it has again postponed a controversial plan to move 100,000 Rohingya refugees to a flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal.
Despite the warnings of the international community that island Bhasan Char is vulnerable to floods and not livable, for long time the Bangladeshi authorities have been attempting to relocate some of the more than a million Rohingya residents to Bhasan Char.
Human rights groups said that some refugees were forced to consent to the deportation and that the plan was strongly opposed by the Rohingya community in general.
Junior minister for disaster management and relief Enamur Rahman said that Bangladesh would increase its focus on diplomatic talks aimed to returning refugees to their country.
