The Arakan Army (AA) has been accused of extorting forcibly relocated Rohingya communities in Buthidaung Township, Arakan State, Myanmar. Reports indicate that the AA specifically targeted two Rohingya individuals—Lalambani, son of Ula Miya, and Mohammad Solim, son of Haidor Ali—who were relocated to Young Chaung village.
Sources reveal that the AA’s extortion practices are linked to these individuals’ use of mobile phones to communicate with family members abroad. Many others within the Rohingya community have faced similar extortion due to their attempts to contact relatives living overseas.
The AA has imposed strict restrictions on the Rohingya, forbidding any communication with individuals outside Myanmar via mobile phones. Violators of this rule face severe punishments or extortion.
In Young Chaung village, where various forcibly relocated Rohingya are concentrated, the AA has installed two authorized telephones, which are the only means of communication allowed. All other mobile phones are strictly prohibited.
