On the morning of April 8, 11 fishermen and their two trawlers were taken by the Arakan Army (AA) from the Naf River, which borders Bangladesh and Myanmar. This happened in Bangladeshi waters near Saint Martinโ€™s Island, according to reports from Dhaka Tribune.

Abul Kalam, the General Secretary of the Teknaf Kayuk Khali Boat Ownersโ€™ Association, described the incident. โ€œThe Arakan Army suddenly crossed into Bangladeshi waters while the fishermen were out fishing,โ€ he said. โ€œThey took the trawlers and held the fishermen at gunpoint before taking them away.โ€

These kinds of incidents are becoming more frequent, creating fear among the fishermen and fish traders who depend on their daily work to survive. โ€œThe situation is getting worse, and weโ€™re worried for our safety,โ€ Kalam added. โ€œWe are asking for help from the government to solve this problem.โ€

Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashiqur Rahman, the Commanding Officer of the Teknaf Border Guard Bangladesh (BG) Battalion (2), reassured the public that efforts are underway to bring the fishermen and their boats back. โ€œWeโ€™ve heard that the trawlers and fishermen have been taken. We will work with the relevant authorities to bring them back safely,โ€ he said.

This troubling event highlights the ongoing struggles in the border region, where both locals and fishermen face constant threats, their livelihoods hanging in the balance. The community is calling for urgent intervention to ensure their safety and to prevent further disruptions to their way of life.
