On the morning of November 12, 2024, six Bangladeshi fishermen were abducted by the Arakan Army (AA) while traveling to Saint Martin’s Island on two fishing boats. The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. as the fishermen were transporting construction materials to the island.
The chairman of the Teknaf-Saint Martin’s Trawler Owners’ Association confirmed the abduction and stated, “The fishermen were midway through their journey when members of the Arakan Army intercepted and abducted them.” He added that the relevant authorities, including the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Coast Guard, were immediately informed of the incident.
However, Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion 02 in Teknaf, reported that no official information regarding the abduction has yet been received.
This is not the first incident of its kind. On October 30, at around 5 p.m., the Arakan Army allegedly abducted 20 fishermen and seized 15 fishing boats near Shapuree Island in the Jaillafara area of Teknaf, further highlighting the ongoing security concerns in the Naf River region.
Efforts to locate and secure the release of the abducted fishermen are reportedly underway.
